Heavy Ion Interactions

400 MeV/N Fe ions are incident upon thick C and Al targets. The neutron fluence (number) was measured vs. angle and kinetic energy.

Simulation Conditions

  • Geant4 version: 8.1
  • Models: Binary Light Ion Cascade

Comments

  • Data: blue crosses, binary light ion model: red crosses
  • Fe ions on C
    • 0 and 7.5 degrees: good agreement at all energies below 700 MeV
    • 15 degrees: model under-estimates data by factor of 5 at 50 MeV and a factor of 10 or more above 800 MeV
    • 30, 60, 90 degrees: model under-estimates data by factors of 2 at energies between 10 and 100 MeV, and factors of 10 above 100 MeV
  • Fe ions on Al
    • 0, 7.5, 15 degrees: model under-estimates data by factors of 10, 5, and 2, respectively between 10 and 100 MeV. Better agreement between 100 and 800 MeV
    • 30 degrees: good agreement at all energies
    • 60, 90 degrees: good agreement below 100 MeV, model under-estimates data by factor of 2 above 100 MeV

Summary

  • The shape of the neutron spectrum is reproduced, but there are large disagreements (factors of 2, 5, 10) in places. Agreement at small angles in C is good.
