*** 2011 Major (collaboration-wide) Development Items ***

1) Releasing multi-threaded prototype(s)

a) First prototype release based on Geant4 9.4

i) ASAP

b) Second prototype release based on Geant4 9.5

i) End of 2011

We request users for feedback, in particular on bottlenecks identified.

2) Variable density material

a) To reduce the number of materials and related cross-sections in memory

b) Allows to define a base reference material and density is used to scale the cross-sections in the same material with different densities

i) For example of air shower, a user may define just one "air" material of standard density, and in his/her parameterized volume, density would be parameterized.

ii) Having just one cross-section table for "air" rather than 100s/1000s of different "airs" with different density

3) Improvement of easiness in physics list

a) Offer an alternative way of registering processes without ordering numbers for each process in physics list

b) Automatic consistency check is provided for this new scheme.

i) Current user's PL should be kept valid.

4) Layered mass geometries in parallel worlds

a) Parallel geometries may be stacked on top of mass geometry and on top of each other which allows a user to define more than one worlds with materials (and region/cuts)

i) Track will see the material of top-layer, and if it is null, the material of one-layer under.

b) Alternative way to implement a complicated geometry

c) A parallel world may be associated only to some selected types of particles

i) May allow defining geometries of different level of details for different particle types

6) Enrich event biasing options, systematic documents, minimal tools for statistics on conversion

a) Review and unify existing biasing options

b) Provide minimal statistics tools to monitor the validity of the simulation results

7) Reorganization of novice and extended examples

a) simple novice examples with clear guidance to extended examples for the way of extending each functionality

8) Unification of warning/error message format

a) Addressing to the requirements from LHC experiments

b) Offers easier and automated detection of warning/error messages embedded in 1000s of output files produced by MC production runs on GRID

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plus-- (though they are not development items)

1) Upon the LHC users' request, we will make the next public release (version 9.5) on December 2nd, which is two weeks earlier than past years.

a) Candidate tag(s) should be available to our major customers by the middle of November

b) We will also release a beta version (version 9.5-beta) on June 30th

2) Forming physics validation task

a) Offers a unified contact point for physics validation issues

b) Offers updated portal to validation results

3) Launching a new requirement tracking system

a) Transfer requirements from Technical Forum, HyperNews, etc. and keep them in the new system

b) Users can track the progress of these requirements
